Saxophonist to mix gospel, jazz for unique entertainment

KALAMAZOO (MICH.)-When you mix the sassy sounds of jazz and gospel together, what do you get? Gospel Jazzspiration. That’s the name of the concert series which features the best of music, gumbo, and more.

The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24 at the Transformation Center of Kalamazoo. The center is located on the campus of the Congregation of St. Joseph at the corner of Gull Road and Nazareth (next to Borgess Health Center and Fitness Center).

Saxophonist and vocalist Herbie Russ of Detroit will be the headline performer. According to his myspace page http://www.myspace.com/herbierusssax he has recorded many popular commercials on the national airwaves for clients including AT & T, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Fox Network, just to name a few. He is also the singer of the Detroit Tigers new home stadium theme song “Home again” at Comerica Park written by David Barrett. Herbie’s musical ride has taken him from his formal education to national touring and studio work recording, to the Detroit Club Circuit, concerts and a recording career. Herbie’s strength as an entertainer lies in his melodic and emotional performances of instrumental and vocal music as heard on his latest and very successful CD “Story of my Life” on Millennia Records.

Mr. Herbie Russ, saxophonist, keyboardist, vocalist, producer and songwriter weaves his magic combining smooth jazz, urban contemporary and pop to create his own definition of “New Adult Contemporary” music. An accomplished Detroit and Nashville studio musician, Herbie Russ’ mischievous musical style has evolved from a lifetime of experiences. He first trained in Jazz at Michigan’s famous Interlochen Music Academy, and then shifted direction to Blues, Gospel and R & B. Influenced by such musical icons as Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Z>Z Hill, Howlin Wolf, B.B.King, Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, James Ingram, Micheal Bolton, Luther Vandrose, and many more.

The evening will also include a Tasting Reception presented by Chef Geraldine Babneaux who will feature Gerry’s tasty down-home gumbo, and more.
