Civic Theatre Presents: The Imaginary Invalid

KALAMAZOO (MICH.)-The Kalamazoo Civic Theatre will present an all new adaptation of Molière’s The Imaginary Invalid, in the Parish Theatre, 426 South Park Street, October 12th through the 27th.

It’s often said that laughter is the best medicine, and nowhere is that prescription more accurate than in this rib-tickling, all new adaptation of the classic hypochondriac. The wealthy Argan is housebound with every disease in the book. Lurking around are any number of quacks that are only too happy to (mis)treat him. Family troubles, including a money-grubbing wife and two headstrong daughters, only add to Argan’s miseries. Complete with original songs, satirical bite and the requisite bawdiness, this telling of the classic comedy gets an injection of 1960’s French pop culture. If you’re looking for a good laugh, this show is just what the doctor ordered!

Karen Berthel, Department Chair for Theatre Arts and an Associate Professor of Theatre Arts at Kalamazoo College is Directing The Imaginary Invalid. In her Civic directorial debut, she leads a talented cast that features Civic veteran Ben Zylman (The Drowsy Chaperone) as the invalid, Argan. Also featured are Carrie A. Bertch (Wait Until Dark), Keith Erik Brown (All Shook Up), Adam Carey (The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940), Kelly Dominique (Tartuffe), Mark Doster (Annie), Janet Gover (The Dixie Swim Club), Tony Holewinski (The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940), Paul Kriner (Over the River and Through the Woods), Lars J. Loofboro (Leading Ladies), Carrie Phillips (Aladdin, Jr.), AJ Sharief (Smokey Joe’s Café) and Kelly White (All Shook Up). Sydney Alexander and Lisa Grace are making their Civic debuts.
