Double-Dutch offers fun, exercise

Kalamazoo (Mich.)- Kalamazoo Public Safety Officers are jumping into action as the sponsor Double Dutch open gym. The activity is held  from 3:30-5:30 p.m. every Tuesday at the NACD Building (612 N. Park St.); and from 10 a.m. to noon every Saturday at New Genesis (1340 Cobb St.).

Participants are welcome to come as often as they wish for this free program geared toward battling youth violence and obesity. The program also hopes to provide a safe haven for youth to laugh, exercise and interact positively with adults, police officers and children from various neighborhoods.

The program is facilitated by officers Rebecca VanBrocklin and Lakisha Jones.

Organizers say they are, ” reaching out to the community for volunteers to jump, twirl rope and mentor the youth during this activity.”

Community Voices was founded in 2005 by James and Arlene Washington in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The weekly print publication provided a unique opportunity to inform the multicultural community of news important to them. In addition, it provided an affordable advertising source for small businesses in the community.
