Looking for Talika: a modern play on marriage

Shenique White (Dee) and Sid Ellis (Don) star in "Looking for Talika."

KALAMAZOO (Mich.)-After 25 years of marriage Dee and Don seemed to have made it through many of the trials most couples endure. However, on their 25th wedding anniversary Dee could no longer keep quiet. Her heart just needed to know about the secret Don had been keeping from her all these years. If they were to continue their marriage, she needed to know about, Talika.

Looking for Talika, a Von Washington Sr. production, is a modern-day drama of the complexities of marriage and trust. Originally created in 1992, Washington has revised the play which has been a popular production for touring companies across the country. The play will be shown for five performances only, Oct. 8-17.“Can a married woman have a friend of the opposite sex? How do you keep a sense of yourself when you are married? Those are some of the many questions raised in this play,” said Von Washington, Sr., writer and director of Looking for Talika. “When I wrote the play, it was because I was noticing so many divorces. I thought, if people discussed certain issues before they were married, they may avoid either getting into something they didn’t want, or knowing before-hand, how to deal with certain issues.”

Washington said each time the play is performed people come up to him saying they too have dealt with many issues the play brought forth. He said while the play has comical moments, its is a great way for married couples, or even those dating and engaged to use the play as a way to open up conversation about their own relationships.

Looking for Talika will play at the Epic Theatre located in the Epic Center, 359 S. Kalamazoo Mall, second floor. Performances are scheduled Oct. 8-17 as follows: at 8 p.m. Oct. 8, 9, 15, 16; and a 2 p.m. matinee Oct. 17. Tickets are $15 each; $12 for students, seniors and BACC members or groups of 10 ore more.
