KALAMAZOO (MICH.)-Now that school is out, the fun at the library has begun. Dozens of spectators and wanna-be Krumpers came out to one of the first summer fun events sponsored by the Kalamazoo Public Library. The event, featuring local Krump master Chestin Grays, allowed those of all ages to join in to learn what Krump is all about. Grays, founder of the local Kzoo Street KonQuerors, instructs students across the area on the history and basics of Krump dancing. The Loy Norrix High School graduate became involved with the dance craze more than three years ago. He purchased an instruction dvd and watched movies featuring Krump, before starting his own local group.

Today, his KonQuerors share their talents with others and compete in regional events.

For Grays, Krump offers urban teens positive outlet for anger and energy through krumping, a highly energetic, combatic, stylized street dance that blends chest pops, arm swings, stomps and more. The dance originated in Los Angeles, Calif. as an alternative to gang violence. The competitive ‘battles’ provide a safe environment while promoting physical activity and health.

Other events at the library include: Tales on the Trails, Chicago Acrobatic team, and many other events.

Community Voices was founded in 2005 by James and Arlene Washington in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The weekly print publication provided a unique opportunity to inform the multicultural community of news important to them. In addition, it provided an affordable advertising source for small businesses in the community.
