KALAMAZOO (MICH.)- On December 26, after the Christmas presents are all opened and left-overs are warming up, Kwanzaa is underway. The holiday (December 26-Jan. 1) was founded 45 years ago by Dr. Maulana Karenga, Professor and Chair of Africana Studies, California State University-Long Beach. He is executive director of African American Cultural Center (Us); Creator of Kwanzaa; and author of Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community and Culture and Introduction to Black Studies, 4th Edition (www.MaulanaKarenga.org).
Community Voices looks back at our stories of 2011 to highlight those in our communities who are exemplifying the principles of Kwanazaa. We have divided the seven principles throughout this site as it relates to their contribution. We feel this is a good way to not only educate people about Kwanzaa, but a way to recognize those in our communities who do a great job 365 days a year! Enjoy!
