KALAMAZOO (MICH.)The members of Iota Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated are “going pink” for yet another good cause! The Chapter will participate in the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Saturday, October 15th. They will unite to emphasize the importance of breast cancer awareness issues.
Chapter President Reuquiyah Saunders proffered, “Early detection will assist in defeating this devastating disease. We want to equip our community with information so that they remain apprised of critical indicators—which could save lives.”
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 230,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with Breast Cancer each year; nearly 40,000 women die from this disease. If 90% of women over the age of 40, would simply obtain a breast screen or examination, 3,700 lives would be saved each year!
Vice-President Vanessa Coakley offered that, “Alpha Kappa Alpha’s programs are designed to address significant health issues that impact our community.” The chapter members have agreed to not only impact the community, but they are impacting their chapter, as well. The Chapter shares salient message points about breast cancer awareness and they also remind each other to invest in pre-screening options.
The chapter will continue to advocate the importance of mammography screening for the betterment of women, families and communities. Please consider supporting the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha on Saturday, October 15th at 9:00 a.m. on Lovell Street in Kalamazoo.
