First African American City Commissioner in Kalamazoo Passes Away

Arthur Washington, the first African American City Commissioner in Kalamazoo passes away Monday. Funeral arrangements are being made by Harper Funeral Home.

According to Arthur’s brother, James Washington, the funeral will be held next week and will include police pall bearers.

The City Justice Center on Crosstown Parkway was named for Arthur Washington in 2003 in honor of his years as a city servant and community activist. Many children (including this editor) marched in parades for decades under the leadership of Arthur Washington who in 1961, founded the Bombardiers Drum and Marching Corps.

Washington was also active as a president of the local NAACP (1957-61) and vice president of the Douglass Community along with various other community service organizations.

Further information on Washington and his funeral will be posted as soon as they develop.
