Nkiyasi Helm exemplifies the Kuumba principle of Kwanzaa: To always do as much as we can, in a way we can in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than when we inherited it. Miss Helm’s desire to inspire other students to write books makes our community a better place for children to express themselves in a positive way.
LANSING (MICH.)- Nkiyasi Helm is 10-years-old, however that didn’t stop her from publishing her own book, The Best Camping Trip Ever! http://www.parablistbooksonline.com The fifth grader of Cumberland Elementary in Lansing, Mich., wrote the book last year, when in fourth grade after winning her school district’s Calberry Writing Award.

“My book is about a girl who decided to go on a camping trip,” said Nkiyasi. “At first she was happy until her mother said, ‘your dad is coming’. Leaisia wasn’t very happy about it; at the end it all worked out good.”

The young author said she was inspired to write the book about camping because it can be a scary (experience). She also enjoys writing and drawing and illustrated her book as well.

“I love writing because you can let all your imagination out and how you feel; the same thing with reading is like watching TV in your head,” she said.

She said the hardest part of writing the book was coming up with the title. Her favorite author is Beverly Clearly because, “her stories are superb, outrageous, very funny and she never stays on one topic,” Nkiyasi said.

The future pediatrician said she wants to continue writing books. For other children, she said, “Young authors, don’t be afraid to express yourself. Let your ideas flow and be relaxed.”

Community Voices was founded in 2005 by James and Arlene Washington in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The weekly print publication provided a unique opportunity to inform the multicultural community of news important to them. In addition, it provided an affordable advertising source for small businesses in the community.
